A reliable learning sequence

  1. Name the frame format and host path. Confirm Classical CAN or CAN FD, then identify SLCAN, gs_usb or a vendor driver.
  2. Prove the physical layer. Pinout, bitrate, polarity, grounding, topology and termination come before decoding.
  3. Keep the raw capture. Preserve bytes, identifiers and timestamps before decoding.
  4. Name the data revision. DBC, EDS, DCF or J1939 definitions must match the system under test.
  5. Validate one known change. A plausible number is not evidence until a controlled stimulus reproduces it.
  6. Publish the limits. Record missing frames, unsupported features and conditions that were not tested; report “no loss observed under these conditions,” not “loss-free.”
