A reliable learning sequence
- Name the frame format and host path. Confirm Classical CAN or CAN FD, then identify SLCAN, gs_usb or a vendor driver.
- Prove the physical layer. Pinout, bitrate, polarity, grounding, topology and termination come before decoding.
- Keep the raw capture. Preserve bytes, identifiers and timestamps before decoding.
- Name the data revision. DBC, EDS, DCF or J1939 definitions must match the system under test.
- Validate one known change. A plausible number is not evidence until a controlled stimulus reproduces it.
- Publish the limits. Record missing frames, unsupported features and conditions that were not tested; report “no loss observed under these conditions,” not “loss-free.”
